Bonus Code Not Working? 7 Reasons and Fixes

A rejected code is annoying, but it almost always comes down to one of seven causes. Work through them in order — most take under a minute to rule out.

Why was my bonus code rejected?

Most often because the code has expired, the promotion is for new customers only, or the code was typed with a small error. Codes are case-sensitive and tied to specific promotions — check those three things before anything else.

Updated This guide was last reviewed on 20 July 2026. Codes change fast — check the operator's promotions page for the current offer.

The 7 reasons a code fails — and the fix for each

1. The code has expired

Promo codes are not permanent. Operators end them when a promotion closes or a claim cap is reached. We track this ourselves: the SportyBet code SBMAX25, for example, is marked Expired on our site because that promotion has ended.

Fix: Check the operator's promotions page for what replaced it. On our latest bonus codes page, anything marked Expired is dead — do not deposit to try it.

2. The offer is for new customers only

Welcome codes work once, on a brand-new account. If you already hold an account with that operator — even an old, dormant one — the code will be rejected.

Fix: Look for the operator's existing-customer promotions instead: reload bonuses, cashback or weekly free bets. Opening a second account to get around this is not a fix — see reason 7.

3. A typo or wrong case

Codes are case-sensitive. WELCOME1X works; welcome1x does not. The classic errors are the letter O versus zero, the letter I versus one, and a stray space copied along with the code.

Fix: Copy the code directly from our listing and paste it, then check for spaces at either end before submitting.

4. The code was entered in the wrong field

Some codes belong in the registration form, others on the deposit page, others in a dedicated promo section of your account. A valid code in the wrong box is still a rejection.

Fix: Read the offer terms to see where the code goes. If registration did not ask for it, check the deposit screen before you fund the account.

5. A country restriction

Codes are usually market-specific. A code promoted for Kenya or Ghana will not activate on a Nigerian account, even with the same brand.

Fix: Only use codes listed for your market. Everything on our Nigeria pages is checked against Nigerian promotions — that is why the country picker exists.

6. The promotion was replaced

Sometimes the operator has not just expired a code — it has swapped the entire promotion. The old code returns an error or, confusingly, does nothing at all.

Fix: Treat it the same as an expired code. Find the current promotion on the operator's site and check whether it needs a code at all.

7. Your account already used it

Welcome codes are strictly one per person, household, device and payment method. If you — or someone in your household on the same operator — claimed it before, the system will reject it.

Fix: There is no legitimate fix, and do not create a second account to force one. Operators check for duplicates, and multi-accounting is a standard reason for closure and confiscated winnings. Move to an operator where you are genuinely a new customer.

Before you contact support: a 5-step checklist

  1. Re-copy the code exactly

Paste it fresh, match the case, and remove any spaces at the start or end.

  2. Confirm the promotion is still live

Check the operator's promotions page and our last-checked date. If either says expired or replaced, the code is dead.

  3. Check your eligibility

New customer? Right country? Right product — some codes are sportsbook-only or casino-only? Qualifying deposit method and amount met?

  4. Screenshot the error

Capture the exact message, the page you entered the code on, and the time. Support resolves coded errors far faster with evidence.

  5. Contact the operator's support — not us

Only the operator can apply or fix a code. Give them the code, your account email, the error screenshot and the promotion name in the first message.

How we verify the codes we list

Every code on PlayBonusGuide goes through the same rolling process. We pull the operator's current promotions, confirm the code appears in the live offer and its terms, and record the date of that check. The result is the Last checked date you see beside every code and on every offer card.

When a code dies, we do not quietly delete it. We mark it Expired and keep it visible, so you can tell the difference between a code that never existed and one that ended last week. Codes can still change between our checks — the operator's promotions page is always the final word.
