How to Calculate Bonus Value Before You Deposit

Headline bonus amounts are marketing. The real question is what a bonus costs to clear — and you can estimate that in about a minute.

What is the quick formula for bonus value?

Divide the bonus amount by the total wagering it demands — that is your rough value per naira staked. Then estimate the cost of clearing: total wagering multiplied by the bookmaker's margin or the game's house edge. If the clearing cost approaches the bonus amount, the offer is mostly noise.

The practical formula

You do not need a spreadsheet. Four steps give you a working estimate for almost any offer:

  1. Find the total wagering

Bonus amount × multiplier. Watch the base: if the multiplier applies to deposit plus bonus, add your deposit to the bonus first. New to wagering terms? Read what a wagering requirement is first.

  2. Check the daily pace

Total wagering ÷ days until expiry. If the answer is more than you would naturally stake in a day, the offer does not fit you — skip it or take a smaller bonus.

  3. Estimate the clearing cost

Total wagering × the margin you pay per bet. As a planning figure, around 5% is reasonable for sportsbook bets at typical minimum odds; for casino, use the house edge of the games you play (a 96% RTP slot means a 4% edge).

  4. Compare cost against the bonus

Bonus ÷ total wagering tells you the value per naira staked; the clearing cost tells you what you pay to collect it. Adjust mentally for minimum odds, excluded markets and how likely you are to finish before expiry.

Two hypothetical offers, side by side

Here is why the calculation matters. Both offers below are invented for illustration — but they mirror shapes we see constantly while checking Nigerian offers.

Offer A — small, light Offer B — big, heavy
Bonus amount ₦5,000 ₦50,000
Wagering requirement 5x bonus 40x bonus
Total stakes required ₦25,000 ₦2,000,000
Expiry 30 days 7 days
Required daily pace ≈ ₦835/day ≈ ₦285,700/day
Rough clearing cost (at ~5% margin) ≈ ₦1,250 ≈ ₦100,000
Value per naira staked ₦0.20 per ₦1 ₦0.025 per ₦1

Offer B looks ten times better on a banner. In practice its clearing cost — around ₦100,000 in expected margin — is double the bonus itself, and almost nobody can sustain ₦285,700 of stakes per day for a week. Offer A costs about ₦1,250 in margin to clear ₦5,000, at a pace a casual bettor can actually keep. The smaller bonus is the better deal by every measure except the headline.

Real offers rarely sit at these extremes, but the direction is consistent: wagering multiple and expiry move value far more than bonus size. That is why our best betting bonuses page ranks by score rather than by amount.

The 10 factors in our Bonus Value Score

Every offer we list gets a 0–10 Bonus Value Score. These are the factors it weighs:

  • Bonus amount relative to the minimum deposit
  • Wagering multiplier
  • Wagering base — bonus only, or deposit plus bonus
  • Minimum odds on qualifying bets
  • Expiry window and required daily staking pace
  • Game and market contribution rules
  • Maximum bet caps while wagering
  • Withdrawal caps on bonus winnings
  • Payment method and eligibility restrictions
  • Clarity and findability of the operator's terms

Commissions and sponsorships play no part in the score — it is editorial, and the affiliate disclosure explains how we keep it that way.

An estimate, not a promise. The Bonus Value Score and the maths on this page are editorial estimates of how fair an offer's terms are. They cannot predict betting outcomes, and no bonus changes the fact that the operator holds an edge on every bet. Treat bonuses as a discount on entertainment — never as a source of income.
